DESCRIPTION

Aoi DA Medaka / 碧Da

Aoi DA is a modern Japanese medaka variety prized for its cool blue-gray head expression, luminous pearl-silver body, and dense reflective scale coverage. Under strong natural or aquarium lighting, the scales create a clean metallic shimmer that contrasts beautifully against dark water.

This imported group displays a refined silver-white appearance with subtle blue tones across the head and upper body. Delicate translucent fins complete the elegant look, making Aoi DA especially attractive in top-view tubs, patio ponds, and display aquariums.

Strain Names

Japanese Name: 碧Da
Romanized Name: Aoi DA
Also Written As: Ao Dai
Species: Japanese Ricefish (Oryzias latipes)
Origin: Japanese medaka strain
Sold As: One male and one female pair

Background & Reported Lineage

Japanese hobby reporting attributes Aoi DA to Medakaya Akkun and describes the strain as a cross between Aoi and Lumina. The reported breeding direction was to produce a blue tancho-style expression, with concentrated blue coloration around the head contrasting against a bright reflective body.

Because a complete original breeder pedigree was not available for review, Aquaphoria presents this as the reported lineage rather than a breeder-certified pedigree.

Defining Traits

Aoi DA may display:

  • Cool blue, slate-gray, or silver coloration across the head
  • Bright pearl-silver body tone
  • Dense reflective lame scale coverage
  • Metallic shine along the head, back, and sides
  • Delicate translucent fins
  • Strong contrast when viewed over a dark background
  • Excellent top-view presentation

The intensity of the blue coloration and reflective shine may change depending on lighting, container color, viewing angle, stress, and acclimation.

Recommended Tub Color

Aoi DA is best displayed in:

  • Black
  • Dark charcoal
  • Deep navy blue

Dark containers help create stronger contrast between the cool-colored head and bright silver body. Fish may appear lighter, whiter, or less blue when viewed in pale containers or immediately after shipping. Japanese hobbyist observations have also documented stronger blue expression after Aoi DA were allowed to settle in a black container.

What You Will Receive

You will receive:

One male and one female Aoi DA Medaka pair

Pairs will be selected for:

  • Good health and body condition
  • Representative Aoi DA coloration
  • Visible reflective scale coverage
  • Suitable male and female characteristics
  • Strong overall strain presentation

Natural differences in body tone, blue intensity, scale density, size, fin shape, and metallic shine should be expected because every medaka is unique.

Actual Imported Group Pictured

The photos and original videos show the exact imported Aoi DA group currently available for sale.

Your pair will be selected directly from this group. The listing does not use generic breeder photographs or unrelated reference fish.

The purchase is for a pair selected from the pictured group and not for one individually selected fish unless arranged separately.

Care Level

Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful
Adult Size: Approximately 1.25–1.5 inches
Best Viewing: Top view or side view
Best Setup: Aquarium, planted tub, patio pond, or medaka container

Aoi DA can be maintained like other Japanese medaka. Provide clean, conditioned water, stable parameters, gentle filtration or aeration, and sufficient surface area.

Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry, especially after shipping.

Feeding

Offer a varied diet consisting of:

  • Quality medaka pellets
  • Small floating foods
  • Crushed flakes
  • Baby brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Other appropriately sized frozen or live foods

Feed small portions that the fish can finish without leaving excessive waste in the water.

Breeding

Healthy, mature Aoi DA may spawn regularly under warm temperatures and an appropriate daylight cycle.

Females carry clusters of eggs temporarily before depositing them onto plants, spawning mops, or other fine surfaces. Eggs should be separated from the adults when fry production is desired because adult medaka may consume eggs and newly hatched fry.

Offspring can naturally vary in blue expression, body tone, reflective scale density, and overall finish. Selective breeding is recommended when working toward the strongest Aoi DA traits.
